Phenoxyethanol is a well-known preservative that has been safely used in cosmetics for years. We use it at a very low percentage (below 1%). It is considered safe by the European Union at concentrations below 1%.
Customers have asked why some of our products (including Citrus Shampoo) are rated a 5 on EWG. We were surprised to see this rating too, because most of our ingredients are rated a 3 or less. EWG considers Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (orange peel essential oil) an irritant. That is the only ingredient in our ingredients list that is rated a 5. We are generally supporters of the work that the EWG does around toxins in personal care, but this rating does not seem fair or accurate. We'll let our customers decide for themselves.
Some of our hotel products contain sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) is a surfactant that is responsible for the lather or bubbles in a shampoo or body wash. It can be manufactured from plant or petroleum sources (ours is plant derived). It has a low hazard score of 3 from the Environmental Working Group (EWG). There has been concern about this ingredient because of possible contamination during manufacturing. There is no evidence linking SLES to cancer or infertility. Because there is controversy behind this common ingredient, we removed it from our retail products.
Pharmacopia Hotel Collection
Pharmacopia retail products are a little different in scent and ingredients than our hotel products. Our retail products are sulfate-free (sulfate-free tends to be a little gentler on hair) and the hotel collection includes sodium laureth sulfate.
Our hotel products, such as our Hyatt Hotels Argan Oil Collection, are custom formulations exclusive to each hotel brand.
Similarly, our Hotel Verbena Collection is slightly different that our retail Verbena products.
While not exactly the same, our Pharmacopia Citrus Collection is very similar to the Best Western exclusive citrus formulation and is available for retail purchase.
Pharmacopia Black Tea and Fig products are exclusive to Best Western Plus hotels and are not available for retail purchase.
The Element hotel amenities are exclusive to the hotel and are not sold on our website.
The Hyatt Hotel exclusive formula products by Pharmacopia are sold on our website in gallon, 16oz and 2oz sizes. We also sell these products on Amazon in 2oz and gallon sizes as our Hotel Collection.
